Do You Actually Need a Mobile App, or Just a Better Website?

“We need an app” is a request we hear often but it’s not always the right answer. Before investing in app development, it’s worth asking whether the problem you’re trying to solve actually requires one.

When a mobile app makes sense:

  • Your users need to access features offline
  • You need push notifications to drive repeat engagement
  • Your product relies on device features like camera, GPS, or biometrics
  • Users will open your app frequently — daily or weekly, not once a month

When a strong website is the better call:

  • Your goal is mainly to inform, showcase, or convert visitors into leads or customers
  • Users interact with you occasionally, not daily
  • You want the widest possible reach without asking people to download something first
  • Budget and timeline are tighter — websites are typically faster and cheaper to build and maintain than apps

The download problem. Even a great app is only useful if people actually download and open it. Many businesses invest heavily in an app, only to find low adoption because the value didn’t justify the extra step for users. A mobile-optimized website removes that friction entirely — anyone with a browser can use it immediately.

A middle ground: progressive web apps. For some businesses, a progressive web app (PWA) offers a lot of app-like functionality — offline access, home screen icons, push notifications — without requiring a traditional app store download. It’s worth exploring as a middle-ground option.
